Sometimes the poker community comes together for a good cause. Chad Brown was one of the most-liked pros on the circuit when he lost a bout to liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer and passed away in the summer of 2014. One of Brown's closest friends, Jennifer Winter, spearheaded a charity tournament in his honor. This past week, the third incarnation of the Chad Brown Memorial Charity Tournament was hosted at the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City, NJ with proceeds donated to T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research.
Daniel Negreanu was the host of the event, which attracted 87 original players and a total of 214 entries in this re-entry event. The initial buy-in was $200 with unlimited $100 re-entries. Half of the prize pool went toward the T.J. Martell Foundation. The total prize pool was over $38,000 with $19,000 raised as donations. The star-studded event also attracted the likes of Chris Moneymaker, Jason Mercier, and Vanessa Selbst.
The final table for the third annual Chad Brown Memorial tournament included Jason Somerville, Jen Shahade, Boston Rob Mariano, Ken Goodkind, Vanessa Selbst, Natasha Barbour, Fatima de Melo, Bruce Halliday, and David Floyd.
Jen Shahade got heads-up with Jason Somerville for the title. Somerville edged out chess champ Shahade and won a PokerStars Championship Bahamas Main Event seat in addition to a cash prize. Shahade won a PPC Aruba seat. Boston Rob shipped a special poker table.
