Everything is bigger in Texas, and it looks like tournament poker is flourishing in the Lone Star state after the conclusion of the latest series. Texas has weird gambling laws. It's genuinely frowned upon even though road gamblers in the vast state created Texas Hold'em. The slicksters got around the laws by creating social clubs with members only paying membership fees to play poker.
Despite the work around, some card rooms were raided by authorities in the past. However, the Champions Social Poker Club keep things kosher, which is why they were able to pull off the Lone Star Poker Series over the last few weeks. The anchor and marquee event was the $1,300 buy-in Main Event. The organizers boasted a $1 million guaranteed prize pool, but they did not have to sweat an overlay.
The Main Event attracted 1,818 runners and they created a prize pool worth $2 million. The top 220 places paid out with a min-cash worth double the initial entry fee. Initially, $355K was set aside to the champion with the top four places earning six-figure payouts. However, the final three players agreed on a money chop.
The final table included Joon Park, Gabriel Andrade, Nick Shkolnik, Jared Hemingway, Michael Wang, Rob Wright, Chris Doan, Kevin Kaylor, and Shawn Rice. Brett Murray bubbled the final table in tenth place.
Rice was the first player to exit the final table in ninth place. Mike Wang, who won a WSOP bracelet back in 2015, busted in fifth place. Jared Hemingway hit the bricks in fourth place, but earned a six-figure score worth $104K.
With three players remaining in the Lone Star Series Main Event, the final three agreed to a money chop with $30K set aside to the champ. At the time Nick Shkolnik sat on top of the big stack, so he earned the best number in the deal worth $257,170. Gabriel Andrade secured a shade under $196K. Joon Park banked $241K for the deal and added another $30K left on the table fo a total score worth $271,420 for the victory after he edged out Andrade heads-up for the title.
