Mike Sexton has done almost everything in poker….except win a WPT event. Sexton faded a field of 648 players at the Playground Poker Club to win the PartyPoker.net WPT Montreal. Sexton defeated Benny Chen in a remarkable come-from-behind victory in which he laid a couple of wicked beats on Chen. The prize pool was $2/2 million Canadian dollars or approximately $1.64M USD. Sexton took down the first-place prize worth $317,896 CAD or $235K USD.

Sexton wins

Okay, you asked for it. Live poker is rigged. It has to be, right? Mike Sexton won a WPT event. Yes, the voice and face of the WPT Mike Sexton went all the way to win an actual stop on the World Poker Tour. In 2011, Sexton advanced to the final table of the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star, but he busted in sixth place. Sexton waited five years to made another final table on the WPT. This time, it was at the WPT Montreal and his final table included Benny Chen, Nadir Lalji, Ilan Boujenah, Ema Zajmovic, and Jake Schwartz.

Hosted at the Playground Poker Club, the $3,850 CAD buy-in event attracted 648 runners. The prize pool was nearly $2.2 million CAD with $317K to first place. When Mike Sexton made the final table, his spot in the booth next to Vince Van Patten was replaced by Tony Dunst.

The top 81 paid out at the WPT Montreal. Notables who cashed... Alex Keating (13th), Ryan D'Angelo (22nd), Andy Frankenberger (24th) Darryll Fish (26th), Jason James (33rd), Brain Altman (37th), Michael Gathy (39th), Darren Elias (48th), Jonathan Roy (54th), Pascal Lefrancois (58th), Eric Afriat (63rd), Keven Stammen (67th place), Kyle Bowker (70th), Mike Dentale (71st) and Garrett Greer (79th).

When Nadir Lalji busted in third place on Hand #106, a heads-up battle between Mike Sexton and Benny Chen emerged. Chen led 10.5 to 8.8M. He'd get Sexton on the ropes early, but failed to put him away. As a result, Sexton went into alligator blood mode and bogged down for a marathon session. They'd play 158 hands of heads-up before a winner was determines. The match looked like it might never end until Sexton seized the lead and never looked back.

Sexton's big double up came with J-10 against A-8. Sexton seized the lead and won the final hand with pocket Queens against K-J. Sexton flopped a set of Queens, but Chen flopped a gutshot draw. Sexton faded the straight and won the pot with a set of Queens. Chen busted out and that's all she wrote. Sexton came-from-behind to win the WPT Montreal.

Coming into the final table, Sexton had nearly $5.8M in career tournament earnings. This win put him over the $6M mark. He's official a Six-Million-Dollar-Man! Sexton also won a seat into the WPT Tournament of Champions at the end of the season at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.
