In the latest bit of sponsorship news, PokerStars announced that they entered a relationship with the Philadelphia Flyers. PokerStars is the first online poker site to work out a deal with the Flyers, so this is a historic move. PokerStars now has three sponsorships with NHL teams as an official sponsor of the Flyers, the Detroit Red Wings, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Gritty will be thrilled. The latest news from Red Spade HQ is that PokerStars will join another team from a major sporting league in America as the newest sponsor of the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL. The Flyers have not won a championship in over 40 years, but perhaps the lucky red spade will put them on track to hoist the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1975. Back in the mid-70s during the heyday of the Broad Street Bullies, the Flyers won back-to-back Cups in 1974 and 1975.
On Tuesday, PokerStars announced they are an official sponsor of the Flyers. Wonder how much they paid Gritty for that honor?
This is a huge deal considering Pennsylvania is one of the few states where online poker is legal in the USA and PokerStars has a firm foothold. Some of the Philly suburbs are located in southern New Jersey, so this is a sponsorship that crosses state lines. PokerStars is also up and operating in New Jersey as well.
Yes, the New Jersey Devils dominates the northern end of the state, but they also have to fight with the New York Rangers for fandom loyalty. Southern New Jersey is split between the Devils and Flyers, but the closer you are to Philly, the greater the changes that you root for the team clad in orange and black.
According to the press release, "PokerStars will work closely with the team to offer PokerStars players the chance to win Flyers tickets and exclusive signed memorabilia through special poker tournaments as well as via monthly sweepstakes on PokerStars Casino."
PokerStars branding, especially the ominous red spade, will also be featured at all home games at Wells Fargo Center and during TV commercials.
This sponsorship will boost PokerStars' overall presence in North America. Online poker is legal in Canada, where ice hockey is a religion, so expect this deal south of the border in the USA will also raise the profile of PokerStars in the Great White North where they already sponsor the beloved Toronto Maple Leafs.
"We are thrilled to partner with such a beloved hockey team," said Rob Battista, Senior Director of Commercial, PokerStars North America. "Hockey fans are some of the most passionate in the world, and we can't wait to collaborate with the team to bring exciting tournaments and rewards to our communities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey."
"We're excited to welcome PokerStars to the Flyers family," added Todd Glickman, Chief Revenue Officer, Comcast Spectacor. "Their dedication to innovation and giving epic rewards and experiences to their players aligns perfectly with our goals on engaging our fantastic community of fans."
Gritty was unavailable for comment, but the mascot has been known to appreciate the finer things in life so they'll probably be super pumped after getting some cool PokerStars schwag!
